About the Role:

The Principal Mine Geology will lead best practice in the field of open cut mine geology. The role will focus on geoscience activities required to commence, execute and cease open cut mine geology activities. The role will support the Manager Resource Knowledge in the assurance of risk-based geoscience models of the subsurface material to inform the entire life cycle of resources, from resource definition through to mine closure.

Accountabilities with the biggest impact:

  • Thought leadership in the multidisciplinary aspects of open cut mine geology activities.
  • Support of appropriate governance requirements for mine geology to inform decisions throughout the entire resource value chain (including resource estimation, extraction, processing, and closure) within and external to BHP.
  • Support the awareness and capability of BHP geoscientists in the application of integrated geosciences to resource exploration, extraction and closure.
  • Support internal technical review process and merger and acquisition projects.
  • Building of trusted relationships with and between BHP Operations and Planning and Technical groups.
  • Identification of key knowledge gaps in the ability to create and deliver mine geology knowledge requirements and maintenance of research roadmaps to influence allocation of resources to research and development initiatives.
  • Influence, lead and manage mine geology research to address knowledge deficiencies identified collaboratively with asset or functional peers within BHP.
  • Promoting BHP as leaders in mine geology to the external technical community, including universities, research institutions and professional organisations.

About You:

  • Demonstrated 15 years of geoscience throughout the resource value chain, from resource delineation through to closure in an industry capacity.
  • Has a record of successfully mentoring and coaching geoscientists.
  • Has led teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in understanding or application of risk-based resources to inform business decisions.
  • Demonstrated deep technical expertise in geoscience including open cut mine geology and its application to business decisions.
  • Evidence of technical thought leadership in influencing research directions.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new concepts through breadth of applied science-based work experience.

Skills, Accreditations and Qualifications:

Required:

  • Tertiary qualification in Geoscience

Recommended:

  • Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in geoscience or resource engineering
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
